About Dr. Mark Lawler
Dr. Mark Lawler grew up in the Los Angeles area and was an avid athlete throughout his youth. In fact, he went on to compete in the collegiate circuit on the track and field team, specializing in pole vaulting. His interactions with orthopedic surgeons during this time exposed him to the specialty. He knew that he wanted to go into medicine and this experience ultimately drew him to pursue a care in orthopedics.
Dr. Lawler started California Orthopedics & Spine in 2000 and has been serving the entire Marin region and surrounding communities ever since. His ultimate goals are to provide patient-centric care and the highest level of quality care in the area. He strives to make every patient feel like an individual and takes great pride in understanding the issues at hand so he can provide a comprehensive, long-term solution.
Education and Training
After earning his undergraduate degree in biology from UC San Diego, Dr. Lawler went on to complete a medical degree at the Chicago Medical School. He completed a year-long internship in general surgery at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, before training for four years in his orthopedic residency program emphasizing sports medicine. There, he gained experience in the full scope of orthopedic treatment, from the treatment of routine fractures to the diagnosis of complex injuries to the knees, shoulders, hips, and much more.
Dr. Lawler returned to California to complete a fellowship in general orthopedic training and sports medicine at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, under the teachings of Dr. Warren King and Dr. Arthur Ting. Following his training, he and his wife returned to her home of Marin County and opened California Orthopedics & Spine doors in Novato. Dr. Lawler specializes in the following treatments and procedures:
- arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle
- labral repair & reconstruction
- femoral acetabular impingement
- proximal hamstring repairs
- ACL/PCL reconstruction
- gluteal tendon repairs
He has worked closely with athletes throughout the Bay Area, including the Oakland Raiders, the San Jose Sharks, USA Rugby, the San Jose Sabercats, the San Jose Clash, and numerous local colleges and high schools.

Certifications
Dr. Lawler has completed his board certification, which means that he is qualified to treat patients at the highest standard of care set by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He is up to date in all his certifications and frequently participates in continuing education events to further his knowledge of advances in the field. Dr. Lawler is also an active member of the California Orthopedic Association and the American Medical Association.
Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work, Dr. Lawler enjoys staying active and can often be found surfing, snowboarding, and mountain biking. He also likes to travel and spends lots of time with his wife and three young sons.
